Facebook' Could Become Adults Only

Alarming ... according to cyber security expert Susan McLean, Facebook gossip sites have "exploded in the last two or three months".
Asher Moses

Facebook' Could Become Adults Only - Ways to force Facebook to give parents access to their kids' profiles will be discussed today by state and federal attorneys-general in a meeting that will also examine an 18+ Facebook age limit.

The idea was first proposed by a South Australian Family First MP, Dennis Hood, and is being championed by South Australian Attorney-General John Rau. Rau argued that giving parents assistance to supervise their children on Facebook would help protect against online predators and limit access to unsuitable material.

But Susan McLean, who was Victoria Police's first cyber safety officer and is now an online safety consultant, said the proposal was “ill informed and it shows a total lack of understanding of what the internet is”.

“It's not Facebook's fault that there are problems on Facebook. You can't legislate against stupidity or poor parenting or anything like that,” said McLean.

“It would be nice but it can't be done and it breaks down any level of trust that you should be trying to develop with your kids.”

Facebook's terms of use currently requires users to be aged at least 13 but there is no proof of age requirement and kids regularly lie to gain access.

At their meeting today, the country's top lawmakers will consider requiring proof of age checks and even raising the age limit to 18, federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland confirmed.

This would be at stark odds with recent comments from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who floated the idea of removing the 13 minimum sign-up age policy.

“Age verification is something that various platforms deal with and I can't see why it should be beyond the wit of Facebook to do the same thing, if that was the solution people wanted,” said Rau.

“I think people need to understand that just because they are operating in the virtual world, that is on the internet, it does not mean that there should not be boundaries or rules or standards of behaviour.

“Exactly how these boundaries and rules should be applied and enforced is a matter that we need to discuss.”

It is unclear how the attorneys-general could apply such regulations to Facebook given it is a US-based company. Rau said changing the rules on access to Facebook would require cooperation from operators and the federal government would need to use its communications powers.

McClelland said yesterday it would be Rau's task to come up with methods of implementing the restrictions.

He said Rau made a fair point as “there has been concern expressed by some parents that the images being put up by their own children are prejudicial to their future career prospects”.

“I think that all Attorneys recognise it as a legitimate issue to raise and … John having raised it, will be tasked … to come back with a few suggested solutions,” said McClelland.

“Having Australian jurisdiction extend off shore is the challenge. That's not to say a bit of discussion can't get some goodwill. Hopefully we will be able to look at a few options.”

Asked whether the issue could be solved simply by parents sitting down with their children, rather than with new regulations, McClelland agreed that this would be a preferable approach.

“Having said that, I have four kids, not in every situation can we reach an accommodation so I can understand some parents have raised the issue,” he said.

But McLean said implementing the proposals would be impossible.

“Say we get this law that says parents are allowed to access their kids facebook accounts, how am I going to prove that I'm your mother?,” she said.

“It's totally unworkable because there is nothing on the internet that allows anyone to age and identity verify anyone, so that's where it's going to fall down in the first place.

“Secondly, American companies aren't necessarily obliged to obey Australian law. Thirdly, tech savvy kids will set up two accounts – here's the one mum can see and here's the one where I do whatever it is I wanna do on it.”

Stephen Collins, spokesman for the online users' lobby group Electronic Frontiers Australia, agreed with McLean that any restrictions would be difficult to enforce.

"We'd very much prefer a social and educational approach - teach people good privacy practice, make it easy for them, educate about acceptable behaviors (e.g. why should online behaviors be different in terms of what we accept from those in the physical world?)," he said.

"So too, a parental right to access that is any greater than exists in law now (such as access to medical details for 16-18 year olds) seems heavy-handed."

Comment is being sought from Facebook. The site counts about 10 million Australian users, or almost half the population.

At the meeting today the attorneys-general will also discuss whether to allow an R18+ rating for video games. The federal government is a vocal supporter of the change but has had difficulty convincing some states that it won't result in a stream of ultra-violent and sexualised games flooding the market.

Privacy is also on the agenda after the government raised the idea of a statutory right to privacy following the hacking scandal that has engulfed News Corporation.

Ways to deal with the online publication of suppressed legal material will also be discussed. Rau said it was clear that suppression orders – which prevent media from reporting details of court cases - were being undermined by social networking sites. ( Sydney Morning Herald/KOMPAS.com)

Twitter-Facebook leaves many people feeling 'Lonely'

Twitter-Facebook leaves many people feeling 'Lonely'
Twitter-Facebook leave people "More Lonely’ : ( LONDON ) Social media leaves many people feeling lonely, alienated and dissatisfied with life, according to American author Sherry Turkle.

In her new book ‘Alone Together’, Prof Turkle from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) argues that despite the advent of social networking sites and text messaging our intimate relationship with technology has not translated into closer personal relationships between fellow humans.

As a result, the Facebook status updates leave people feeling lonely.

“These days, insecure in our relationships and anxious about intimacy, we look to technology for ways to be in relationships and protect ourselves from them at the same time,” Sky News quoted her as saying. (ANI)

NYC Hookers "Selling Sex on Facebook"

WASHINGTON : A sociology professor at Columbia University has revealed that New York City’s sex workers are now increasingly plying their trade on Facebook, after popular classifieds website Craigslist shut its Erotic Services section last year.

Sudhir Venkatesh, who has been analyzing trends of the world’s oldest profession, estimates that the average escort now finds 25 percent of clients through Facebook, reports Fox News.

“Even before the crackdown on [Craigslist's] adult-services section, sex workers were turning to Facebook: 83 percent have a Facebook page, and I estimate that by the end of 2011, Facebook will be the leading on-line recruitment space,” Venkatesh wrote in Wired.

Facebook allows a sense of independence letting prostitutes “control their image, set their prices, and sidestep some of the pimps, madams, and other intermediaries who once took a share of the revenue,” said Venkatesh.

The professor notes that the transition has been occurring for some time, but with Craigslist officially out of the picture, Facebook is fast becoming the one-stop shop when it comes to paying for sex.The finding has been published in the latest issue of Wired Magazine. (ANI)

Press watchdog rules, Twitter messages by civil servant not private

Twitter messages by civil servant not private
A British civil servant, who claimed invasion of privacy after newspapers published her Twitter messages, has had her complaint rejected by the press regulator. Sarah Baskerville, an administration manager in the Department for Transport, published a series of embarrassing tweets, which two newspapers reported in November.

She was critical of the coalition’s cuts, attacked Downing Street “spin” and told her 700 followers that the leader of a training course she attended was “mental”. Her comments were republished by The Daily Mail and The Independent on Sunday, which provoked her to complain to the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) that she had a “reasonable expectation of privacy” when she made them.

She also pointed to a disclaimer on her Twitter page that her tweets represented her views and not those of her employer. Deciding in the newspapers’ favour, the PCC said the fact that tweets are publicly accessible on the web was a key consideration.

“It was quite clear that the potential audience for the information was actually much larger than the 700 people who followed the complainant directly, not least because any message could easily be retweeted to a wider audience,” the Telegraph quoted the regulator as saying. The decision also took into account civil service rules on political impartiality, which the newspapers said justified highlighting Baskerville’s views.

“In this case, the commission decided that republication of material by national newspapers, even though it was originally intended for a smaller audience, did not constitute a privacy intrusion,” PCC director Stephen Abell said. “This is an important ruling by the commission. As more and more people make use of such social media to publish material related to their lives, the commission is increasingly being asked to make judgments about what can legitimately be described as private information,” he added. Lie about age on Internet - 6 out of 10 kids

Kids&Internet
LONDON : 6 out of 10 kids ‘lie about age on Internet’ - A new study has revealed that six out of 10 youngsters who get familiar with strangers on the Internet lie about their age and 43 per cent have online ‘friends’ they’ve never met in real life. The survey from the children’s charity Kidscape interviewed more than 2,300 young Britons aged between 11 and 18 about their Internet use.

The survey, that marked Safer Internet Day, showed that currently one in two young people lied about their personal details on the Internet. Of those, the one in eight young people who talk to strangers online are the most likely to lie, with 60 per cent lying about their age and 40 per cent about their personal relationships.

In a separate survey for online security firm Kaspersky Labs, YouGov found that as many as 43 per cent of people with Internet access have online ‘friends’ they have never met in real life. Over half (54 per cent) of those aged between 18 and 24 have online friends they haven’t met in real life, identifying the possibility that young people today are sharing personal information from strangers.

Kidscape officials say their survey indicates that many young people adopt a different identity online. “We were alarmed by the number of risks being taken by teenagers online. We know that safe online behaviour is taught in schools and by other organisations like us, but teenagers seem to be unable to relate the risks to themselves,” the Telegraph quoted Peter Bradley, Kidscape’s deputy director, as saying.

More than 45 per cent of young people interviewed said that they are sometimes happier online compared to their real lives. Forty-seven per cent of teenagers also said that they behave differently online. Bradley said, “These findings suggest that children see cyberspace as detachable from the real world and a place where they explore parts of their behaviour and personality that they possibly would not show in real life. “We can’t allow cyber-worlds to be happier places than our real communities, otherwise, we are creating a generation of young people not functioning adequately in our society.” (ANI)

SocialMonkee – Your Instant Uniques Backlink Builder to Your Pages Every Day

Less than a week ago I launched SocialMonkee, an instant link building solution allowing you to easily build 25 uniques backlinks to your pages every day, with the push of a button! SocialMonkee is free to join, and very easy to use, which partly explains why it’s growing very fast! Let me tell you how it all started…
SocialMonkee – Your Instant Uniques Backlink Builder

I came up with the idea about two months ago… I wanted a way to get do-follow inbound links to my new pages and sites fast, so that they get indexed in the search engines quickly, but building such a system turned out to be more time-consuming and expensive than I originally thought.

I stuck with the idea I had in mind and came up with this solution, which currently has 100 sites in the backend, all on different C-Class IP addresses, and a lot on different A-Class and B-Class IP addresses. Now let’s talk numbers…

To set this up would cost…

105 domains = $1,199 per year
Hosting with 100 C-Class IPs = $5,400 per year
System development = $3,000 one-time
Sites development = $10,000 one-time
Firefox Plugin development = $700 one-time
Maintenance fees = N/A
Copywriting expenses = N/A
Marketing expenses = N/A
TOTAL = $20,299

Still, you can join free… That’s why I need your support to spread the word about SocialMonkee, and get your friends to join, but that’s not the topic of this post! Let’s talk about the system itself: SocialMonkee will help you dramatically increase the number of backlinks to your pages, for better search engine indexing, rankings and traffic! This will give your pages extra online exposure.

If you realise the potential SocialMonkee has, you will quickly want to upgrade your account from Free to Premium. As a Free member, you can submit 1 URL to 25 sites, once every day, free. That’s a total of 175 backlinks every week, 750 every month. As a Premium Member, you can submit 1 URL to 100 sites, three times a day! That’s a total of 2,100 backlinks every week, 9,000 every month to your sites and pages! So if you have a lot of pages (on a blog or site) then Premium is a great option.

Premium members also get link reports and also RSS feeds of each project. This is vital to allow your links to get indexed. There is also an advanced video showing Premium members how to take their RSS feed and ping it to get your links indexed in the search engines.

The best part is… If you want to upgrade, you have two options. The first option consists of paying the ONE-TIME fee of $47. Pretty cheap, isn’t it? This is a one-time payment, meaning as you use the service, it works out cheaper and cheaper. Well, there’s an even cheaper option… The second option consists of referring 12 persons to SocialMonkee to get a FREE Premium Upgrade! Your account will automatically be upgraded to Premium when you reach 12 referrals.

Firefox Plugin

An important aspect of SocialMonkee is that you can submit a URL to the system from Firefox. With this plugin, all you need to do is to click a few times and your URL is submitted to 25 or 100 sites, depending on your membership level. Submitting a URL via the members area takes less than 2 minutes, but with this plugin it takes less than 1 minute!
